Spicing It Up

Today we are going to talk about my new button holder. I have had this small spice rack for years. We have used up all the spices that we like. My in-laws purchased it for us, and I just didn't want to part with it. I decided to convert it to a button holder.

This was a pretty simple project. I emptied the left over spice jars, and then I soaked them in warm soapy water to get the labels off. Then I picked a color to paint the wood part. This will go in my office/craft room. The color theme I am going with in there is black, silver, and teal or turquoise. I decided to paint the wood grey and then write the word "Buttons" in Teal.
The other day I posted about free stencils and font pages. Instead of using a stencil for this I simply found a free page of script alphabet and printed it out. Then I used a technique I read about on Pinterest. Who doesn't love Pinterest!
Anyway, I cut out the letters I needed and then measured for placement. I held a letter against the wood and with a ball point pen I pushed it against the letter giving it pressure and traced it so it would show thru on the wood. I did this for every letter. Then I simply used my teal paint and painted over the pen indentation. I couldn't believe how easy this made it. I think everyone who has seen this technique is saying, "Why didn't I think of this".
I then picked out a few buttons to place on the front, and filled my jars with some of my favorite colored buttons.

I know everyone may not have this exact spice rack, but I am always seeing them at local thrift shops. Many of them have some kind of wood on them you can paint. Now I have my buttons handy, and I also have a cute decoration! I hope you can find a spice rack soon, and please show me some pictures of your completed button holder!

fun! I use rotating spice rack I got at a thrift store for all my brads, buttons, and little bits I don't know what else to do with and I LOVE it! some of the glass bottles were missing lids and I was lucky enough find single ones at a different thrift store :)

thanks for visiting my little blog and following me...I see we aren't far from each other I read your dedication page for your son and I saw some familiar names... Louisville, Floyd county (I work in southern Indiana for The Home of the Innocents) and I drive to New Albany every week...
